Welcome to the Bassassins landing page on MilitantOutdoors.com!
Folks lives’ intersect in some of the most peculiar ways; cops and robbers, victims of tragedy, “key parties”. But there is some kind of percentage, probably, that would say fishing… or the Internet. Maybe both?
Enter the alter egos Smooth and Basstard, a couple of hardcore anglers from Ottawa’s inner city, who met only recently on Fish-Hawk.net, and have now combined forces in producing some great angling videos.
Chasing the shorelines of local Ottawa Rivers, various lakes and all along the Mississippi River, together they have collectively produced a great lineup of videos which are taking the angling community by storm and helping to inspire the next generation of anglers. In my opinion, the level of response they have gotten so far has been phenomenal, and deserved of the determination and passion these guys have for fishing. Their hard work and love for fishing shows in the energetic atmosphere conveyed in their videos. Gone are the wood paneled walls and the Absorbine Junior.
This is Bassassins.
For the longest time the two have been fishing from shore, waist deep in waders and other small watercraft. These days they are on a rip hunting shoreline smallies, but admit that they will pretty much go fishing for whatever they feel like, from perch to muskie, even site fishing for gar. Combing the shoreline for spots has produced some great fish so far by the looks of things.
Armed with spinning gear, fly gear and camera gear, Smooth and Basstard keep their audiences glued to their videos as they land fish after fish, where camera footage is everything from first person view, to right in the water with the fish, capturing all of the action from all angles. Footage is raw, and matter of fact.
When asked about the stigma surrounding fly anglers; things such as pipes and wicker baskets, Basstard had only to say, “A nickel on a 6weight?!?! Bahhh NOW that is excitement... Smooth is here to readjust that stigma, the bend in that fly rod says it all.”
Militant Outdoors: What's your take on tournaments?
Basstard: “That is definitely a plan… Does Smooth’s float tube count?! Tournaments don't recognize it.”
A great couple guys working to produce something that they clearly take pride in, and share so others may enjoy as well. The support from family and friends has helped drive them to get out fishing. Noting how the love of wives can sometimes be tested with fish hands bait in the fridge and cars that take on a new personality sometimes after a weekend of fishing. “Truly Lucky boys” they shared.
We look forward to sharing more great raw fishing footage and feature articles from Bassassins in the future.

An amazing season has come to an end. Always on the hunt for adventure, fish and fun were plentiful. As much as it pains me to let this one go, open waters will soon lead the way to new challenges. What better way to celebrate this harsh but glorious winter but with a “Big Old Mix Tape”.
With no further adieu…
We had the honour to fish with an excellent bunch of skilled icers. Wish we could have been out with more, but time is so little and more seasons shall come. Early morning walleyes, complimented with pike setting fire to the tip ups, followed by after noon jumbo perch and slab crappy delights…ripping through the water columns chasing lake trout. We had it all. Victory at times came with a cost but no giant is for free and perhaps we still carry the consequences. But experience has shown that there is always light at the end for those who pursue and endure. The combination of day trips and local scouting missions quickly became a weekly exercise. Surely there was no shortage of opportunities waiting to be ceased.
There are no favourite seasons and we are always excited for the one to come.
Winters in Ontario can be unpredictable at best but one thing you can be sure of is that mother nature doesn’t care for days off work. She is as cruel as she is beautiful. For us, every minute counts and this is a time for great adventure. The hardship is as much part of the experience as the success.
Take it or lea– …wait a minute is this a trick question?
There are no excuses needed as 3 am often comes too soon, little sleep willingly traded quickly for the promise of adventure. Going through minus 35 C without windchill, and no shelter, to the days of basking in the sun with a light sweater on, no chance is left to waste. Fueled by the prospect of elusive beasts, menacing and powerful, under freezing conditions and most vulnerable to the elements with a possible chance for great tragedy, no questions asked. Well…Yes Sir, Of course Sir...
Nature is at its best when she is raw and intense, bigger than yourself. The challenge is only met by its rewards.
Times get tough, the tough go ice fishing… Spring is approaching fast, which means high anticipations at Bassassins’ headquarters. Pike spawn, steel-head runs, big carp and gar in May, small mouth and musky all summer long, chunky fall walleyes and first ice. Its a perfect loop.
